USA 2003

Director: Thomas McCarthy
Cert: 15

Runtime: 89 mins
Starring: Peter Dinklage, Patricia Clarkson, Bobby Carnavale, Michelle Williams

Winner of the Audience Award at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival, this off-beat independent comedy drama stars Peter Dinklage as Finbar McBride, a lonely man with dwarfism who inherits an abandoned train station in rural New Jersey. He moves there to live the life of a hermit after suffering the bereavement of his best – and possibly only – friend. But despite his intention to live a solitary existence, he unexpectedly meets fellow loners Olivia (Patricia Clarkson), an artist devastated by the loss of her son and subsequent separation from her husband, and Joe (Bobby Cannavale), an open and friendly hot dog vendor whose good-natured demeanour lays waste to Fin’s emotional barricades. The unlikely trio struggle with the conflict between their instinct to connect and open up to each other, and their need to carry on existing in the less risky state of isolation.
