Wajda burst onto the international film scene in 1958 with ‘Ashes and Diamonds’ accepted as one of the masterpiece of Eastern European cinema. Katyn may well be his last film. Like Ashes and diamonds it deals with the legacy of the Second World War. Set in Poland during the Russian and German invasion in 1939 the film deals with appalling massacre in the Katyn Woods near Smolensk, during which Wajda’s father was murdered. A powerful and moving film, it is one of the greatest films about the Second World War.
